Luke Fair delivers a smooth, medium-tempo voyage beautifully blends beats and styles. Balance 011 is mostly progressive—house with flavors of funk, electro, disco and trance. The mixing is flawless and the mood is that of a gentle sweet breeze flowing happily past your face. Fair’s hallmark is manipulating tracks to give them originality. He does this really well. But I ask, is all this effort really necessary? Is 98% of the planet really going to be able to tell that he took the vocals out of some obscure song? To the dancer on the dance floor it doesn’t really make any difference. With the saturation of technically skilled DJs the emphasis now tends to be on tech tricks, instead of a good off-your-nut dance. So why do so many DJs put their best dance songs at the end of the set? You get going and the music stops. This CD also leans to the trend in the dance scene about pleasing a party crowd instead of taking one on a cerebral journey. So if you want to dance, with your Cosmopolitan in hand, this is the CD for you. Fair has a lovely, warm feeling to his sets, which is lacking in most recent releases, and his selection of progressive songs are beautiful. It would be great, if he would take this to the next energy level, so we could get really going on the dance floor.
