Brazil—Rio and Sao Paolo in particular—has become the default home country for the UK’s Layo & Bushwacka! The longstanding tech-house duo is no stranger to the mixed compilation, putting together numerous double discs associated with clubs representing what they are doing at any given time, Their contribution to the GU series is a great showcase of what gets the Brazilians going. Minimal is the key vibe here. Whether its is the tech-house that placed them on the electronic map, or straight up house, or bare bones techno, Rio is all about breathing room and space between the sounds. Uncluttered and clean, there is such a skeletal feel to Rio that at times it could use a little messiness in the form of some rolling connecting beats filling in the gaps. Instead, the bleeping digital inserts signify that this is more about the emptiness than it is about the sounds.
