Bonobo Dial M For Monkey Ninja Tune Release date: June 10, 2003
Bonobo’s Dial M For Monkey (his first for Ninja Tune) proves that being somewhere between ape and machine is a very good thing. While still maintaining the instincts of a primate, Bonobo’s Simon Green is no mere monkey; his trip-hop shuffles contain sophisticated samples and offer many layers if not walls of sound. His second full-length doesn’t rely on bites but some amazing instrumentation with sitar and flute. His ethnic flourishes and psychedelic soul is completely authentic when you find out that his father was a member of the legendary Fairport Convention. The band was responsible for influencing British bands like Led Zeppelin to combine eastern ragas and California folk, and Bonobo does it all with a downtempo slop. Whether you’re on a plane or on the beach, if you want to start your summer off right just Dial M For Monkey.
